Most health food stores stock a large variety of bulk dried teas, flowers, roots and berries. If you do a bit of research, you can make a tea specific to your particular needs or symptoms; anti-stress, immune boosting, and so on. I chose to make a blend full of antioxidants that will also stimulate the immune system and promote relaxation.
Rosehips are delicately sweet and an excellent immune system booster as they contain about 50% more vitamin C than oranges. Chamomile is a well-known medicinal herb that has been used for centuries as a sleep-aid; it also has renowned anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Finally, blueberries can decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease, high blood cholesterol and they have one of the highest antioxidant capacities of any readily available fruit.
Chamomile Rosehip and Dried Blueberry Loose Leaf Tea
- 1 cup dried chamomile flowers
- 1 cup dried rosehips
- ½ cup dried blueberries
In a large bowl, gently crush the chamomile flowers. Add the rosehips and blueberries and stir until thoroughly combined. Transfer the mixture into an air tight, re-sealable container and store in a cool dry place. Steep one tablespoon of tea in one cup of boiling water for 2-3 minutes, sweeten with honey and enjoy!
This tea is an excellent way to relax just before bed, while giving your body the vitamins and antioxidants it needs to repair and re-build while you sleep. Experiment by adding dried lavender buds, spearmint leaves or citrus rinds…and even a tablespoon of gin!
