Hot Coconut Oil Hair Treatment with Lemongrass and Mint

I’m outside a lot during the summer; always riding my bike or walking Juniper, often multiple times a day. Unfortunately, the elements do a number on my hair this time of year. ¬†However, I’ve found a way to combat sun and wind damage and dry split-ends with an at-home DIY hot coconut oil treatment. I spoil my hair with this blend every few weeks…or more during particularly hot and dry seasonal spells!

Coconut oil is my follicular godsend, it’s full of antioxidants and fatty acids that leave my hair incredibly shiny and hydrated. I also like to throw spearmint and lemongrass oils in the mix, for their stimulating and repairing effects on hair. ¬†Plus, the tingling sensation and invigorating scent combination doesn’t hurt!

Hot Coconut Oil Hair Treatment with Lemongrass and Mint

  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon jojoba or avocado oil
  • 3 drops spearmint essential oil
  • 2 drop lemongrass essential oil

Wash and condition hair as normal and tie up into a towel to partially dry. Bring a small pot of water to boil on the stove over medium-high heat. Place the coconut oil in a double boiler over the water, and then add the remaining oils. Stir until the oils are melted and thoroughly combined. Remove from heat and set aside to cool until the oil is warm to the touch, but not hot. Remove the towel and place in the dryer for 1-2 minutes to warm up. In the meantime, gently massage the oil into hair, concentrating on the ends. Wrap hair with the warm towel and allow to set for 30 minutes to an hour. Rinse hair out in the shower and follow with shampoo and conditioner.

Style as usual and repeat every 2-3 weeks for deep hydration!
